Bringing together three distinct versions inspired by the legendary dbx 160 VCA compressor and its later variants, Comp160 faithfully captures the tone, response, and character that made these units a staple in professional studios.

From punchy drum tracks to tight bass lines and cohesive mix bus control, Gem Comp160 delivers the fast, musical compression engineers rely on for shaping dynamics while preserving clarity and impact. Each model recreates a different evolution of the classic design, giving producers the ability to choose the character that best fits the material.

Three Classic Compressors, One Plugin

Within a single plugin, Gem Comp160 allows users to switch between three compressor models, each offering its own distinct sound and behavior:

• VU: The original version delivering rich, punchy analog character with the unmistakable feel that made the 160 a studio staple. With VU-style metering and a classic control layout, it represents the origins of VCA compression.
• XT: A warmer, more harmonically dense version with enhanced low-frequency presence and fuller bottom end. The XT model includes the Overeasy control for soft-knee compression and benefits from the harmonic character of the optional transformer in the reference hardware.
• A: A more modern and transparent evolution with slightly faster response and tighter control. Its snappy attack makes it ideal for taming sharp transients while maintaining clarity and a wider frequency response.
